Why Toothless Smiles Are Hard To Love

Embarrassment isn’t the only side-effect caused by missing teeth. Tooth loss also causes the following:

  • Infections: Your missing teeth pave the way for bacteria to easily cause gum disease.
  • Diet Problems: You may have to be picky about what foods you eat.
  • Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction: TMD refers to damage to the jaw joint.
  • Worn Teeth: Your remaining teeth now have to bear the weight they used to share with their neighbors.
  • Difficulty Speaking: Words can become muffled, slurred, or lisped, and therefore hard to understand.
  • Accelerated Aging: As your teeth fall out, your cheeks sink in, your jaw shrivels, and you look older.

Restore Your Smile With Dental Implants

Magnolia Dental Care has a solution to all of the negative effects of missing teeth. Dental implants are unique tooth replacements that not only replace the chewing surface of your tooth but the root as well. This gives the implants the following benefits:

  • Stability: A dental implant provides a solid foundation for a dental crown that mimics the roots of your natural teeth.
  • Durability: With the implant situated in the jawbone, your replacement tooth is much more likely to last a long time.
  • Esthetic Appeal: Not only will our dental implants fill in the gaps in your smile, but they’ll also fill out your face and support your jawbone.

Why You Should Get Dental Implants

Why You Should Get Dental Implants

Patient-Focused Dental Implant Process

Dental implant surgery is life-changing. In the most severe tooth loss cases, dental implants can enable an individual to do things they haven’t done for years. To make sure we give you beautiful results, Magnolia Dental Care gives each of our patients a personalized treatment plan.

Diagnosis, timeframe, and the number of surgeries will vary on a case-by-case basis, but each treatment plan will follow a general structure.

Living With Missing Teeth

Living with missing teeth has been proven to have an impact on health. Missing teeth can first lead to a personal condition called jaw atrophy. Jaw atrophy is when your jaw deteriorates. This can lead to trauma and disease in your gums.

Missing teeth also lead to improper digestion. Digestive problems can lead to malnutrition later. Dental implants stop the effects of missing teeth by strengthening the jaw’s roots.

Bone Loss

Because the roots of your teeth stimulate your jaw, when your teeth fall out, the jaw can deteriorate. Dental implants are a considerable way to fight against bone loss.

The dental implants fuse into your mouth by a process called osseointegration. This special process allows the implants to become one with your body. By doing so, the implants will reduce jaw atrophy and the chance of infection in the future.

Secure Foundation

Dental Implants are as sturdy as the Space Needle! Dental implants are the most anchored tooth replacement available. With these protections, they can look and act the same as your natural teeth!

This is possible because dental implants use materials that fuse to and complement your jawline. The dental implant process creates a great foundation that can last forever if properly installed and maintained.

Dental Implant Options

The type of implants you will receive will depend on how many implants you need. These are the most common implant varieties:

  • Implant-supported crowns are usually for a single missing tooth.
  • Implant-supported bridges are usually for a series of missing teeth.
  • Implant-supported dentures are usually for a whole arch of missing teeth.
    • The All-on-4 Treatment Concept® is a great option for implant-supported dentures.

Implants For Full-Mouth Rehabilitation

Many patients use implants for full-mouth rehabilitation.

Full-mouth rehabilitation is identical to the average implant process but with other treatments, such as veneers or whitening, added. A full-mouth reconstruction could also include implant-supported dentures.

If your smile is missing lots of teeth, has tooth stains, and/or broken teeth, full-mouth rehabilitation is for you.

Candidates For Dental Implants

Dental implants are great for those dealing with missing teeth. You may also find dental implants beneficial if you have very weak or dead tooth roots.

Dental implant candidates also need to be healthy enough to undergo surgery before moving forward.

If you don’t qualify for dental implants just yet, your dentist probably offers other options to replace your missing teeth. Ask your dentist about these options.

Find The Right Dentist!

The key to a positive implant experience is the right dentist!

The right implant dentist will help you receive the most up-to-date methods and techniques of dental care. This is important because your implants will only last as long as they are maintained by you and the dentist.

Poor implants equal needing to pay the cost to replace them!

Proper installation and care can help your implants last forever!

More Details On Installing Dental Implants

1
Dental Implant Consultation

The first step to transforming your smile is to set an appointment with us. During your appointment, our team will do three things:

  • Perform an Exam: Dr. Radkey will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and jaw.
  • Take Images: Using x-rays and iCat 3D imaging, we’ll take pictures of the area needing the implant.
  • Discuss Your Options: We’ll provide recommendations so you can make an informed decision about your care.

2
Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a separate procedure done before dental implants to help those with weak jawlines achieve better, more permanent results.

Bone grafting can be done in either two ways:

  • Natural Methods: This is usually done by using bone marrow taken from your body. This method provides better long-lasting results.
  • Synthetic Methods: Your dentist will just use artificial materials to form the missing bone marrow.

3
Implant Placement

When you return for your next appointment—assuming you don’t need any teeth pulled—we’ll begin the implant process:

  • Anesthetic: Implant placement is a surgical procedure, so we will provide you with anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the treatment.
  • Post Placement: You’re now ready for your new implant. The implant is a tiny titanium post that your dentist will carefully insert into your jawbone.

4
Healing

You’ll need to heal for three months or so. This time will ensure that your gums are completely healed and your implant has integrated successfully.

Your dentist will give you instructions on how to care for your new tooth after your surgery, but here are some general guidelines:

  • Get lots of rest.
  • Eat soft foods.
  • Use an ice pack frequently on the sore area.
  • Avoid sucking on anything for at least the first few days.

5
Abutment Placement

Your dental team will situate a small connecting piece on top of the implant. This piece sits above the gum line and will soon hold your new tooth. It helps the crown fit easily and precisely into your current smile.

Sometimes this step is carried out before the healing process. When the abutment is placed will depend on your dentist and your needs.

6
Forming Your Crown

Your personalized new dental crown will be placed once healing is complete. Some dentists will use a revolutionary 3D printing machine called CEREC to build your dental crown. Others will send impressions to a lab.

When all is said and done, you will receive a dental crown that acts just like the rest of your smile! These crowns will look like your other teeth, and they’re supported by a solid implant foundation.

7
Dental Implant Restoration

After the 2-4 months of healing, you’ll come back to Magnolia Dental Care for your restoration appointment. Don’t worry, all the surgery is over now. This is the fun part! We’ll replace the temporary crown with a permanent one. Your new crown will:

  • Be made out of sparkling porcelain material.
  • Match the color of your other teeth.
  • Resist cavities and stains.
  • Provide a strong chewing surface for your new tooth.

Several Dental Implant Considerations

There are many different paths you can take for a more confident smile. Your specific path will depend on your dentist’s findings during the dental consultation! Dental implants are versatile devices that can be adjusted or paired with many treatments. Work with your dentist to create a smile that is truly yours.

Some paths your dentist may consider during a consultation include the following.

Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants act the same as normal implants; they’re just half the diameter. The mini implants are used to add greater support for large dental work, such as dentures or bridges. They are also a great choice for patients with lower jawbone density.

The All-on-4® Treatment Concept

The All-on-4® Treatment Concept is an ingenious technique to place implant-supported dentures. Instead of using one implant per root, the All-on-4® Treatment Concept saves time and money by strategically using four implants for an easier process!

Fixed Implants

Fixed implants are the most popular form of implants on the market due to their durability. These implants are fused into your body, adding a measure of stability and comfort for the crown on top. Fixed implants are the basic form of implant that generally only supports a crown.

Removable Implants

The term “removable implants” can be a bit misleading; the implants are permanent. However, the artificial tooth placed on top can snap on and off for maintenance and use. This option is mainly given for those with full dentures such as the All-on-4® Treatment Concept.

Dental Implants FAQ

If you want to regain confidence in your perfect smile, you may have some questions about how to get there. That is completely normal! We have listed some typical dental implant questions below, but contact your dentist with more specific queries.

At Magnolia Dental, we are willing to work with your insurance company to make sure you get the most benefits out of your plan. Each implant situation is going to look a little different. Some procedures will be more expensive than others. If you want a better estimate of how much your dental implants will cost, please call us or your local implant dentist for more information.

During the procedure itself, you’ll be completely numb in the area and won’t feel more than slight pressure.

If irritation or pain does become a problem during the recovery period, here are a few things you can try:

  • Ice your jaw for fifteen minutes throughout the day.
  • Avoid chewing. Stick to soft foods as much as possible.
  • Take over-the-counter medications to minimize the pain.
  • Call Dr. Radkey if the pain persists.

One of the greatest advantages of dental implants is that they last a lifetime. Other tooth replacements like dentures or dental bridges need routine maintenance and upgrades over time. Dental implants don’t!

If you take good care of them, you’ll be able to keep your implant for years to come.

The only piece of the implant that might need replacing is the crown or restoration. Dental crowns are used for chewing, so they do tend to get worn down. Replacing a single crown is much easier and less expensive than replacing an entire row of dentures.

If you are missing teeth, you’re a good candidate for implants. Implants require a sufficient amount of jawbone material to bond properly, but if you don’t have enough, that’s okay! We can get you a bone graft that will strengthen your jaw and make implants possible for you.

You might also need an implant if you have a tooth that will fall out, or if you have a tooth infection that cannot be resolved by a root canal.

The first thing you should do is clear your schedule for a couple of weeks after your surgery appointment. You’ll want to keep your daily activities during recovery to simple tasks that won’t require too much exertion.

Another thing to think about: what are you going to eat? Fill your fridge and your freezer with soft, but nutritious foods. Maybe blend up and freeze a few smoothies beforehand!

Once you're through with the healing process and you’ve received your dental implant restoration, you don’t need to do anything special to care for your implant. You should treat your implant just like you would one of your natural teeth.

That means you brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see your dentist every six months. These biannual visits will clean your teeth and make sure they’re healthy.

Here are some things you can do to prevent implant failure:

  • Avoid Infections: Using appropriate dental hygiene is a great way to avoid gum infection and keep your implants safe.
  • Be Wary of Allergic Reactions: Let your dentist know if you’re allergic to certain dental equipment so they can take care of your needs.
  • Avoid Tough Hits: Use a mouthguard during sports, and be careful with hard foods to protect your implant.
