You’ve been waking up with jaw pain, but anti-inflammatories seem to take care of it — for a while, anyway. The pain persists, and thinking it may be your sleeping position, you splurge on new pillows, all the while taking those anti-inflammatories. Enough, already! Your body is sending you a message that something is wrong with your jaw. At Magnolia Dental Care, our team has decades of experience helping people like you who suffer from chronic jaw pain.
TMJ or TMD?
The point where your upper and lower jaw meet is known as the temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. When the TMJ becomes inflamed, you may have what is called temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. A number of things cause TMD, including:
- Head or facial trauma caused by accident or injury
- Misaligned teeth
- Misaligned jaw
TMD is often difficult to diagnose. While symptoms such as jaw pain, lockjaw, and the inability to open your mouth as wide as needed are more obvious, there are some symptoms that appear to have nothing to do with temporomandibular joint disorder, such as:
- Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
- Ringing in the ears
- Dizziness
- Head, neck, and shoulder pain
- Facial swelling
We Can Help!
Dr. Kent Moberly has trained at the exclusive Pankey Institute in treating disorders of the TMJ. Our diagnostic technology allows us to determine the source of your pain, then, whether through orthodontics or an occlusal appliance (oral splint), Dr. Moberly can correct the misalignments that are causing your pain, giving you the relief you’ve been looking for.
